Important Ways to Make a Long Distance Relationship Last

Long Distance RelationshipsThere are some uniform jobs that require being away from home for an extended period of time. Anyone who is involved with someone in any branch of the military can attest to that. There is no denying that the distance can be difficult on a couple, but it doesn’t make it impossible. Whether you are dating a military-person, someone in the travel industry (stewardess or pilot), or just in a long distance relationship in general, here are five tips that can help you manage the distance without feeling a strain on the relationship.

1. Learn Each Other’s Schedules

Trying to keep in touch with your significant other can be difficult, especially if you are in different time zones. One of the easiest ways to avoid missing each other’s calls or catching them when they are busy is by learning each other’s schedules. You can even set aside a specific time to talk to one another and fill them in on your day and what is currently going on in your life.

2. Stay Honest

You know how they say that distance makes the heart grow fonder? It can also bring seeds of doubt, jealousy, insecurity, and every emotion in between. It is important that you share your feelings with your significant other; allow them to help you work through these feelings rather than dealing with them on your own. Even though they may be far away, that doesn’t mean they cannot be the rock you need.

3. Surprise Them with Mail

In a time when we rely on technology for communication, we tend to forget how special we feel when we receive something in the mail that isn’t a bill or junk mail. Surprise your significant other with handwritten letters, postcards, or care packages. Not only will these be great keepsakes, but they also allow you to be creative and truly show your loved one how much you miss them.

4. Avoid Negativity

We won’t lie to you and say that being in a long distance relationship is a piece of cake. In fact, it can be extremely difficult—especially when you have people close to you who try to plant seeds of doubt in your head. You know those people who will try to tell you that your significant other is probably out partying, cheating on you, and doing other unsavory things. When someone is unsupportive about your relationship, remind them that it is your relationship and to butt out.

5. Embrace Sexual Tension

Yes, we know a relationship is more than just sex; however, you cannot deny that it does play a big role in making a relationship work, even in a long distance relationship. Sure, you may not be able to do the deed, you can still entice one another and reinforce the sexual desire you have for one another. You can do this by sending risqué text messages, having flirty webcam chats, and even engaging in phone sex.

6. Be Grateful for One Another

Because you are dating someone who may not be around all the time, it is always important to be thankful for the time that you do get to spend with one another. Whenever you get to see your significant other, you want to make the most of the time together that you have. Whenever there is a problem, try not to harbor ill feelings toward one another—especially if you only have a brief time to share with one another.
